Ancient roots of tungsten in western North America

چکیده

Abstract The highly irregular and localized distribution of tungsten deposits worldwide constitutes a supply challenge for basic industries such as steel carbides. Over Earth's history, has preferentially accumulated at paleocontinental margins formed during the breakup supercontinents. Later crustal thickening these paleogeographic regions magmas they produce are associated with large districts. However, all largest in modern North American Cordillera, which preserves over 3 b.y. geologic record margin abundant magmatism, limited to narrow Canadian Tungsten Belt northwestern Canada. We use neodymium isotopic compositions scheelite (CaWO4) from Cordillera constrain factors that control distribution. document is specifically materials that, on average, were derived mantle Mesoarchean Paleoproterozoic. Weathering erosion supercontinents Columbia Rodinia favored pre-enrichment sediments. orogenic heating pre-enriched sediments produced reduced melts capable efficiently scavenging America.

Declining Mountain Snowpack in Western North America*

JANUARY 2005 AMERICAN METEOROLOGICAL SOCIETY | ountain snowpack in western North America is a key component of the hydrologic cycle, storing water from the winter (when most precipitation falls) and releasing it in spring and early summer, when economic, environmental, and recreational demands for water throughout the West are frequently greatest. In most river basins of the West, especially in...

mtDNA haplogroup X: An ancient link between Europe/Western Asia and North America?

On the basis of comprehensive RFLP analysis, it has been inferred that approximately 97% of Native American mtDNAs belong to one of four major founding mtDNA lineages, designated haplogroups "A"-"D." It has been proposed that a fifth mtDNA haplogroup (haplogroup X) represents a minor founding lineage in Native Americans. Unlike haplogroups A-D, haplogroup X is also found at low frequencies in m...

Phylogeography of chestnut-backed chickadees in western North America

North American chickadees and titmice are believed to be descendents of Eurasian lineages that crossed the Bering land bridge in the late Pliocene 3.5 to 4 million years ago (Gill et al. 2005; see also Chapters 1 and 2). The North American chickadees are divided into two groups based on phenotypic differences (references in Gill et al. 1989). The black-capped group contains four species: black-...

Neurospora in temperate forests of western North America.

The fungal genus Neurospora has a distinguished history as a laboratory model in genetics and biochemistry. The most recent milestone in this history has been the sequencing of the genome of the best known species, N. crassa. The hope and promise of a complete genome sequence is a full understanding of the biology of the organism. Full understanding cannot be achieved, however, in the absence o...
